Travel by Car:
The Monastery is about 35 minutes from downtown Wellington. Drive up the Hutt Motorway (Hwy2) until the Silverstream turnoff 1. Turn right over the river bridge. About 150 meters after the bridge there is a roundabout. Stay in the right lane and turn right – onto Eastern Hutt Rd. You are now travelling south again (and should soon pass under the rail bridge) but you are on the south side of the river. Follow the signs to Stokes Valley. Turn left into Stokes Valley Road and drive to the top of the valley (4 km). Take the sign-posted left hand turn into Rakau Grove. The monastery is at the end of this short cul-de-sac street; about 100m. There is on-site parking.
If you are coming down the west coast (SH1) take the Pāuatahanui exit and head over Haywards Hill (SH58). At the bottom of the hill take the left exit onto the Hutt Motorway heading NE on Hwy2 until the Silverstream turnoff (see 1 above) and follow the same route.
By Public Transport:
The link to Stokes Valley is the #120 bus. This begins at Lower Hutt; Queensgate Shopping Centre. It terminates at the bottom of Rakau Grove – 100m from the monastery.
From Wellington Central Train Station:
It is best to take the train to Taita Station. Cross the road to the shopping centre and catch the #120 bus.
From the Airport:
Take the ‘Airport Express’ (orange) bus #91 to Wellington Central train station. Then take the train to Taita cross the road to the shopping centre and catch the #120 bus. The trip takes less than one hour.
